This is surely some of Joel's finest work ever. On the yet to be completed "Pros & Cons" Joel presents us with his increasingly potent skill on all levels. His guitar playing is truly badass. His lyrics are nothing short of Master work. And the strength of character in his voice demands constant attention. This record simply feels like the genuine article. He has really outdone himself this time.

A sturdy departure from his previous experiments with instrumental guitar this collection of songs is Joel's reconnection with form. Here his use of language and various characters of voice are established as clearly his style. A style he seems quite comfortable with as his voice is much more mature and assured this time around. Audio samples will be available soon. Participation is currently out of print. These songs are scheduled to be remixed and will be heading to master for print after the Pros & Cons LP is finished.

Originally entitled, "I'm fat, you're ugly", then renamed "Yen & Yang", then finally named "Twenty-Eights" upon realization of the songs duration it is the last and arguably the greatest of Joel's improvisational journeys through delayed guitar. Twenty-Eights is a fantastic twenty-eight minute and twenty-eight second voyage into what Joel calls "delayed guitar madness". We like to think of it as a pure auditory assault on bliss and easy listening. Either way there is nothing like it on record.

If this piece is being played the next time you ingest hallucinogens we suggest you be prepared to greet the tunnel of white light with open arms or else run as fast as you can to get away. This piece of crazed and stark raving mad beauty barrels along like a runaway train then crashes brilliantly somewhere near ten minutes and again at the end with epic broadstrokes in a theme that leaves us spellbound.

This is the last in a series of unreleased guitar pieces. Between late 2000 through mid 2002 Joel had been experimenting with building soundscapes on guitar using delay effects before recording this one. He switched gears entirely in the same year writing what became "Participation", which was a collection of songs much closer to "pop" format. We are still trying to coax him to release other titles from his solo guitar experiments period but he claims a lack of time to devote to doing so as his reason for not.

The period of this record which began with the song "Trust" and ended with the song "John 11:35" took shape at the beginning of 2001 and came together fully around November. That year, Joel's second in New York City, brought about massive changes in him as a musician and in his approach to songwriting. Evident on this record is his wrestling with a sense of direction and a flirtation with extreme and even opposing styles of music. With a record of songs that seemingly do not belong together he pulls off a remarkable feat by making it feel balanced and unified. These songs may be from all sides of the map but this record rejoices in its own schizophrenia and declares its desire for us to listen. This record is a great example of New York City's mood and mind in the year 2001 both before and after.
